Life in 2045

The defining question of our age is not what the machines can do, but who will own them. Every technology in this book has a shadow, and the shadows accumulate: the intelligence of Part I, the transformed body of Part II, the fused state of Part III.

What follows is not a prediction. It is a roadmap across eight frontiers of the next two decades, written from 2045 and looking back, so that the choices still open in 2026 are legible while they are still choices.

The conventional way to tell this story is as a contest: corporations against states, private power against public. It is wrong because states did not decline. They spent the decade more powerful than at any point in living memory, and less able to act alone.

Intelligence became the first input that no one could substitute. What it produces matters less than what it redistributes, and redistribution is never neutral.

A note on method. The scenarios in these pages are fiction and the analysis is not. Where a date appears it is an argument, not a forecast, and the reader is invited to hold it to that standard.

The Westphalian state, for all its violence and failure, rested on a bargain. In exchange for obedience it offered protection, and the terms of that exchange were legible. A platform offers no such bargain.

When a citizen's currency, identity, connectivity and memory are all rented from the same counterparty, sovereignty has not been transferred so much as quietly reassigned.

This is the actual shape of the shift, and it is stranger than a contest.

Two decades is long enough for a technology to become infrastructure and short enough for the people who built it to still be answering questions about it.

That is the window this book occupies, and it is the reason the tense is past. Looking back from 2045 makes the decisions visible as decisions rather than as weather.

Nothing here was inevitable. Every chapter has a fork in it, and most of the forks were taken quietly, by people who did not think of themselves as deciding anything at all.

The chapters that follow are arranged as a descent: from the machines, to the body, to the state, to the work, to the built world, and outward.

Each is written as though the argument had already been settled by events, because that is the only vantage from which a decision looks like a decision.
